Our client came to us with DA approval to transform a small, semi-detached Sydney house into a light-filled open plan home for a young family. The new addition to Maroubra House adds a second storey whilst re-connecting the dwelling to the outdoors and gardens beyond.

It was a typical post-war, mass built semi-detached houses in the area, it sat on a small block, had tiny rooms, a single bathroom, separate living, cooking and dining areas. Working closely with her designer our aim was to extend the home to make it larger for their growing family. Gardner Construction wanted to add in some additional building solutions to further create that open plan living, we did this by increasing the lighting of the house. We increased the size of windows and added skylights throughout the stairway and in the living area, this brightened and lightened the house. We installed high cathedral ceilings lined in plasterboard to the main entry and master bedroom to increase the height of the home; accentuating the increased light and making the home feel larger. We ensured we added detail in our custom built stairs and steel balustrade with a solid oak handrail, all with concealed fixings to finish it off. We used Oak Ryde Havwood flooring to continue the brightness in the house, as well as featuring VJ panelling on both sides of the stairway painted in a bright white. We worked with one of GC top cabinet makers to build custom built joinery cabinetry with 2 pac Polyurthane V grooved panelling, Blum soft close drawer runners & hinges throughout the kitchen, pantry, laundry and bedrooms to create a family storage solution ensuring there was more usable space for the family.

This family home presents contemporary living and entertaining, its clever design creates a family environment of effortless style and comfort. Offering open plan living areas, high ceilings, flooded with natural light and an incredibly spacious master bedroom design.
