Splurge or Save
It is important to make every dollar count in a home renovation so ensure the money you spend will have the biggest impact. For renovators, particularly first-timers, knowing where to splurge and where to save is not always that clear.
Think about what is important to you, it is important to indulge in something that means a lot personally.
Saving dollars by spending time researching is our number one tip. Interior elements like colours, finishes and lighting can make a huge difference to your home. Spending more money does not always guarantee the best results. It is particularly important that finishes, materials and colours are chosen together. Obtain samples of everything and lay them out together, ideally in the space where you intend to use them. Pay attention to how they look in different lighting before you make final selections.
Reassess what must be removed, think twice before ripping out existing finishes, like old bathroom tiles, or completely remodelling your kitchen. Sometimes just changing the grout, toilet, choosing a new paint colour or adding new joinery can transform a tired space much more cost effectively.
Think about the things in your house that you touch throughout the day. These are the things that should have a quality to them.
Good quality flooring is so important and is an investment worth making. It is such a large component in your home. Whether it’s timber, tile, terrazzo or concrete, a beautifully finished floor will improve all the other items and finishes in the house and will age well. Other important items frequently used are door handles, tapware, and your kitchen surface.
Invest time in researching options and alternatives. For example, natural timber kitchen cabinetry might be out of your budget, but a decor from the Laminex Woodgrains range could achieve the same effect in a way you can afford.
Money spent on ensuring that your house feels comfortable; heating and cooling, sealing doors and windows, and insulation is an important investment. Insulated good quality windows, or air conditioning/heating system will save you money in the long term.
Think about lighting, changing your lighting can be an inexpensive way to completely alter a space and set a mood.
Try not to get carried away with gadgets, with so much technology available, it can be tempting to fill your home with electronics, automation and expensive appliances, but costs can quickly add up and you can invest in these things over time.
